TWELVE BEAUTY INTELLIGENT FRONTIER FACIAL OIL

This lipid restoring oil may trick you into thinking this product isn’t potent. The deceptively light texture leans towards watery rather than oily, which deepens penetration, rather than coating your skin. After 7 days of consistent use, you’ll be left with glowing, fortified, revived and resilient skin from the inside, without the oil slick.
This thoughtful formulation utilizes processes and and ingredients we don’t normally find in most beauty products. For example, unsaponifiables.  Hadn’t come across this term until TWELVE Beauty’s Intelligent Frontier Facial Oil. It literally means cannot be made into soap, which is good news for skin. These healthy natural oils are extracted so purely and contain the most active ingredients of their respective plant oils. From there, they are bonded to alkalizing molecules which make this oil bioavailable, highly nutritious and safe for all skintypes.  The lipids in this formulation penetrate the skin deeply to maximize hydration, vitamin penetration and texture.
Why don’t we see this level of quality from all facial oils? The meticulous extraction and efficacy achieved in Twelve is an expensive process. Not to use car terms but this oil, created by cosmetoligist, botanist and pharmacist Dr Pedro Catala, is high performance.  Sadly, the price reflects that at $80 for 10ml, but the product is loaded with science not hype.
Now let’s talk about my love for revitalizing and skin softening pollen. This oil adds this superstar to the mix, along with deeply effective hyaluronic acid. Pollen reinvigorates and feeds the skin with amino acids, enzymes, magnesium, zinc and vitamins, while the workhorse hyauronic acid drives it into the dermis to plump and retain hydration.
Also loving the thoughtfulness of TWELVE’s Miron violet glass, to preserve and prevent the light sensitive deterioration of the product. And the smaller 10ml version made for Ayla is great for travel and ensures freshness.

Celeb Fav Bio-Oil: Just Hype or Heavenly?

Screen shot 2013-01-21 at 8.32.55 PM

Bio-Oil is coined as specialist skincare for scars, stretch marks, uneven skin tone, ageing, and dehydrated skin. And, more recently Kim Kardashian revealed it as her secret weapon that she’ll be using throughout her pregnancy to keep stretch marks (and wrinkles) at bay. It is also reported to be  favored by celebs such as Natalie Portman and Rochelle Humes. So, why all the hype about this “miracle” oil?

The key ingredient is PurCellin Oil. PurCellin is not a single ingredient, it is a delivery system which reduces the overall thickness of the substance and helps Bio-Oil absorb easily into the skin, which in my opinion, it does well. The product may be called an oil and look greasy but it does in fact absorb super well, leaving a light sheen but not a greasy, slimy feel (unless of course, you over apply), But, just to be clear, PurCellin Oil™ is a laboratory recreation (man made) of the preen gland oil of ducks, and acts as the delivery system for Bio Oils other ingredients.

It is also a non-acnegenic product, can be used on sensitive skin and is hypo allergenic. Made up of a mix of plant oil and vitamins, Bio-Oil helps moisturize and enhance the skin to its fullest. It relieves dry skin, helps soothe after sun exposure, and can be used in the bath. In fact, one of my favorite ways to use it is in the bath for general hydration. For healing it is recommended to be used twice daily for a min. of 3 months.

As I’m not pregnant, nor am I using it for stretch marks, I cannot speak directly to those claims. But, I can give my personal opinion to claims of hydration and skin tone. After using it only for a few days a dear friend touched my arm and immediately remarked how soft my skin felt, loved it!

I also noticed the skin on my legs was looking more even, not as red. I’ve started to dab a little bit around my eyes for moisture and fine lines and so far, no breakouts, and good results. I’m hesitant to apply it all over my face because of break outs but I’ll let you know if I dare go there. Until then, I have to say for my purposes, Bio-Oil is pretty heavenly!

My only warning for those who are super conscious about ingredients is that Bio-Oil does contain paraffin or mineral oil in it. Paraffin is a solid mixture of hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum which does raise a flag for some people however, it is considered a low overall hazard and permitted by the FDA for use as as an ophthalmic emollient. How to get Zen while Working: Florame USB Oil Diffuser

Somewhere in the spectrum of the stress or joys of work there is always room for a little aromatherapy relief. I’m a believer that scent and aromatherapy stimulates positive and calming energy. Although essential oils used in aromatherapy are not regulated by the FDA there are studies which show benefits such as relief for anxiety and depression as well as an improvement in quality of life, particularly those with chronic health conditions.

Which brings us to the uber-benefits of sitting at your computer, a tech savvy working gal, and plugging in a USB scent diffuser into your computer drive to align with your actual ambitious work drive. I was totally intrigued when I found the Florame USB Oil Diffuser at detoxmarket and set it straight to work.  How it works: Pick from fragrances like bergamot, verbena, peppermint, or lavender, fill the miniature bottle included in the package with your oil of choice, insert it into the specially designed USB portal, plug it into your computer, and let the air purification begin. If the scent feels too strong there are three different settings to regulate dispersal. I selected the yogi scent which is a blend of organic essential oils that induce harmony and peace. I found it initially a bit strong but I adjusted the dispersal and was fine. Now just because it plugs into your USB it doesn’t mean the device stores data like an actual flash drive, at least not yet! Florame oils are made in Provence, France and are also 100% organic.

Essential oils used in aromatherapy are typically extracted from various parts of plants and then distilled. These highly concentrated oils can then be inhaled directly, or diffused or applied to the skin through massage, lotions or bath salts. The way aromatherapy is thought to work is by stimulating smell receptors in the nose, which then send messages through the nervous system to the limbic system — the part of the brain that controls emotions. This limbic system when stimulated releases endorphins, neurotransmitters and other ‘feel-good’ chemicals.

Here are some of the top essential oils used and their purposes:

  1. Chamomile – Known for the popular herbal drink, chamomile is said to be useful for tension and anxiety, as well as improving sleep problems. It can also be used to soothe stress-related skin conditions.
  2. Eucalyptus – Eucalyptus is sometimes known as the natural antiseptic – useful for coughs, colds, aches and pains. It has a woody, camphorous scent.
  3. Geranium – The floral, earthy scent of geranium is said to be helpful for stimulating the nervous system as well as various skin conditions.
  4. Lavender – A well-known scent, the soothing qualities of Lavender can be used to combat anxiety and stress. It’s also said to be useful for burns or skin conditions.
  5. Peppermint – Peppermint tea has been oft recommended for digestive problems, and the refreshing scent can also be used to combat nasal congestion which arises from colds.
  6. Lemon – The sharp, tangy scent of lemon can help stimulate the nervous system and it is also said to be useful for the circulatory system.
  7. Tea tree – Another natural antiseptic, the fresh scent of tea tree oil can help with lung congestion as well as warding off bugs and insects.
  8. Rosemary – The well-known herb can produce an essential oil which can help with muscle aches and fatigue.
  9. Ylang Ylang – This oil has been known as a natural antidepressant, soothing anxieties and reducing muscle tension.
  10. Sandalwood – The rich, sweet fragrance of Sandalwood is used mainly for skin complaints.

Why you should add an essential oil to your skin care regime

I had the same notions a lot of us do about rubbing oil onto my skin. I assumed this was a recipe for a breakout disaster and although I know my skin could use the nourishment I wouldn’t risk it. Well, I was wrong. Using a natural, essential oil-based product, showed me I had a strong misconception about the results. We have sought out ways to eliminate oil but in turn have created methods of hyper-production. The skin needs oil and therefore when we work hard to remove it, it works harder to replace it creating oilier skin.

“Like cures like, so a little bit of a healthy, plant-based oil on the skin helps the skin stay balanced,” Dr. Hauschka Skin Care CEO Mirran Raphaely told TODAY.com. “The right amount signals to oil glands that they can stop producing. It may sound counter-intuitive, but once you try this method, you’ll never go back.”

Decleor’s Rose D’Orient Soothing Serum Price: $68.00 This is one of my all-time favorites. It is a skin-soothing serum, helps me with redness in my skin, full of 100% all Natural essential oils for soothing and hydrating the skin. It comforts irritated skin and leaves it feeling soft nourished. This serum is particularly good for sensitive skin and I love the aromatherapy scent, it is a beautiful spa-like fragrance that also feels calming to me. This super-fine oil absorbs instantly, allowing the skin to breathe while it goes to work to prevent the signs of premature ageing and assisting skin growth and repair.

The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil  Price: $9.00 Referred to as a “medicine cabinet must”, this teensy bottle goes a long way in clearing blemishes. Just one drop can take on the nastiest of acne (whiteheads, the stubborn hard red ones etc…), without drying out your skin.
