Celeb Fav Bio-Oil: Just Hype or Heavenly?

Screen shot 2013-01-21 at 8.32.55 PM

Bio-Oil is coined as specialist skincare for scars, stretch marks, uneven skin tone, ageing, and dehydrated skin. And, more recently Kim Kardashian revealed it as her secret weapon that she’ll be using throughout her pregnancy to keep stretch marks (and wrinkles) at bay. It is also reported to be  favored by celebs such as Natalie Portman and Rochelle Humes. So, why all the hype about this “miracle” oil?

The key ingredient is PurCellin Oil. PurCellin is not a single ingredient, it is a delivery system which reduces the overall thickness of the substance and helps Bio-Oil absorb easily into the skin, which in my opinion, it does well. The product may be called an oil and look greasy but it does in fact absorb super well, leaving a light sheen but not a greasy, slimy feel (unless of course, you over apply), But, just to be clear, PurCellin Oil™ is a laboratory recreation (man made) of the preen gland oil of ducks, and acts as the delivery system for Bio Oils other ingredients.

It is also a non-acnegenic product, can be used on sensitive skin and is hypo allergenic. Made up of a mix of plant oil and vitamins, Bio-Oil helps moisturize and enhance the skin to its fullest. It relieves dry skin, helps soothe after sun exposure, and can be used in the bath. In fact, one of my favorite ways to use it is in the bath for general hydration. For healing it is recommended to be used twice daily for a min. of 3 months.

As I’m not pregnant, nor am I using it for stretch marks, I cannot speak directly to those claims. But, I can give my personal opinion to claims of hydration and skin tone. After using it only for a few days a dear friend touched my arm and immediately remarked how soft my skin felt, loved it!

I also noticed the skin on my legs was looking more even, not as red. I’ve started to dab a little bit around my eyes for moisture and fine lines and so far, no breakouts, and good results. I’m hesitant to apply it all over my face because of break outs but I’ll let you know if I dare go there. Until then, I have to say for my purposes, Bio-Oil is pretty heavenly!

My only warning for those who are super conscious about ingredients is that Bio-Oil does contain paraffin or mineral oil in it. Paraffin is a solid mixture of hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum which does raise a flag for some people however, it is considered a low overall hazard and permitted by the FDA for use as as an ophthalmic emollient. Burning Desire: Candle Wish List

Screen shot 2012-12-13 at 10.10.36 AMAs a self acknowledged candle junkie I have tried and tried many a candle. And, many with great results. I’ve already written about my love for Diptyque’s Baies candles, a classic for year round, and now the Diptyque Holiday Collection $32.00 – $68.00  This limited edition Holiday collection is packaged in elegant lovely containers decorated with a replica of a hand-drawn design which gives off a beautiful colored light when burning.   The collection is a range of 3 candles Sapin Doré paying homage to the fir tree, Amber Oud  reminiscent of an Oriental journey filled with rare spices, and Oliban transporting you to an Arabian dream highlighting resin frankincense.

Screen shot 2012-12-13 at 10.36.13 AM

For a better price point, still not bargain basement deals, I also love Voluspa’s Champagne Rose $24.00 or the Grande 3 wick versions for $60.00. The Grande version ha a 120 hour burn time and is beautiful on a table with a triple wick being burnt. It also smells divine with notes of rose champagne, cassis berries, and white rose petals. This scent really fills the room but is not too overwhelming. I like to light the Grande size when having guests over to create a nice warm ambiance.

Every time I burn Restoration Hardware’s French Oak candle $39.00 – $49.00 EVERYONE asks what it is and remarks how much they love it, it is Herbes de Provence mingled with purple iris, white oak and a hint of smoky wood. Totally enveloping and the packaging is stunning for gifting! The candle comes is 3 sizes packaged in the wooden box which I now use on my desk filled with pens and colored pencils.

And last but not least, Patch NYC OWL Candle $37.00 When I saw these candles I was drawn in by the vintage-inspired packaging and old world feel. Then for a double do good, the candles are 100 percent soy with a 72 hour burn time. The labels on the front of these candles are silhouettes of different animals and the owl scent is an earthy scent of sandalwood, tobacco and vetiver – perfect for a winter vibe. I also recommend the STAG candle with the scent of siberian fir that is fresh but not overpowering, thanks to light notes of citrus and raspberry.

Put Your Best Face Forward & Exfoliate!

Screen shot 2012-12-04 at 10.47.29 AM

One of the steps we most commonly skip in our skin care routine is exfoliation. It is not a daily necessity but if you add this step into your weekly routine you will notice the difference almost immediately. So, in preparation for upcoming Holiday parties and winter weather, here is how and which gentle exfoliators we recommend use to put your best face forward! We’re suggesting gentle so as not to cause any irritation or skin melt-downs right before the Holidays!

The reason that exfoliation is important is that it is likely if you don’t ever exfoliate your skin is covered in dead skin cells. These dead cell can make your skin look dull, dry, and older. It will also have an effect on the way your makeup applies, specifically foundation, or how well your moisturizer absorbs. There are many different levels and types of ways to exfoliate such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels and retinoids. But for our purpose here are some tips and weekly (or bi-weekly) exfoliators that aren’t overly complicated.

TIPS:

1. Pick a scrub that is meant for the FACE. There are many body exfoliants in the market but they will be way too harsh for your face. Exfoliating body scrubs are usually thicker in consistency, sometimes contain oils, and are usually for exfoliation but not necessarily cleansing.

2.Always make sure to add luke warm, not hot, water while applying your exfoliator. Do not apply to dry skin as it can also make them too harsh. In fact most exfoliants are intended to be activated by using water.

3. Use gentle circular motion while massaging the skin. Do not damage your skin by thinking if you scrub harder it will make the product work better. Be kind to your beautiful face and take it easy.
4. Try our favorite exfoliating tool: Clarisonic They come in a range of options and colors and the new MIA is amazing as a gift available in tons of colors and you can personalize it! I did this for  my sister a couple of years ago and she loved it!
5. After exfoliation, don’t forget to apply your moisturizer! Always remember that a good moisturizer will not clog up your pores. It is a must for healthy nourished skin, especially when you are exfoliating.

Cosmedicine Medi-Morphosis Self-Adjusting Exfoliator $18.97 One of the best safety features about this product is you can’t over-exfoliate with this scrub because the beads will start to dissolve before that even happen. It is great for sensitive skin and still highly effective without being harsh, it feels gentle. It is recommended for use twice weekly.

Noted by Cosmedicine: Inspired by the advanced exfoliation treatments performed in a physician’s office, this deep pore, resurfacing treatment with stop-action crystals: Accelerates the release of cellular debris, roughness, dullness and skin damage. Leaves skin smoother, brighter, more luminous and never over-exfoliated In clinical studies, it measured: 12% Reduction in pore size & Zero irritation or sensitivity among the 217 subjects tested.

Olay Skin Smoothing Cream Scrub $4.79 at Drugstore.com. A conditioning beta-hydroxy formula with microbeads cleanses skin deeply while gently exfoliating to rejuvenate skin. It leaves a nice radiance and smooth feel. A good oil free option for every day use although you DO NOT need to exfoliate every day. This product may be slightly drying so remember to moisturize after use. This applies after use of any exfoliator.

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant $40.00 – 20% OFF at Drugstore.com Highly recommended but the priciest of our picks. This product starts out as a gentle, rice-based exfoliating powder which activates upon contact with water and turns into a lush foam. When activated it releases Papain, Salicylic Acid and Rice Enzymes that micro-exfoliate dead cells, instantly leaving skin smoother and brighter. Formulated without artificial fragrances and colors.

I may be, well must be, somewhat biased but tenoverten’s WORTH $18.00 is one of my favorite nail polish colors of the season from the famous NYC salons tenoverten. The polish is both 5 FREE + CRUELTY FREE and lasts by using the best raw ingredients all compliant with the leaping bunny effort to encourage suppliers to also provide cruelty free ingredients. Not just in the finished product. Worth is currently featured in this month’s Marie Claire and is a truly gorgeous gold. Not too yellow and not glittery, an on-trend must-have metallic. Too-Faced Perfect Eyes Waterproof & Tearproof Eyeliner in Perfect Moss $18.00 This new liner is easy to apply and a perfect daytime green-gray color. Dark enough to create effect and make your eyes pop but still light enough to get a natural look. It’s also a great gift as application is easy, it glides on smoothly to get a clean line. Another great ‘eye’ gift is always a classic black mascara like Lancome Definicils $26.00.

Obsessive Compulsive Lip Tar in Stalker $16.00 NY Based cult brand Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetic is not only 100% Vegan and Cruelty Free but this amazing product is a hybrid between a lip gloss and lipstick. Meaning it goes on like a gloss but then dries matte like a lipstick. A few other pros are that it lasts for hours (date night may be an exception), is highly pigmented, and comes in a range from subtle to super bright fun. Even colors like neon pink, blue, and orange. I’m not quite ready to be that experimental but a classic Hollywood red like Stalker or the new color Electric Grandma are safe bets to gift anytime of the year. And remember a little bit goes a long way so only use a tiny dab to start with.

Or for luscious lips try this UBER-LUXE lip set from iconic Gucci designer Tom Ford.  Hint: if anyone is looking for a gift idea for me then this is the one. Chapped Lip Care: Why & How To Heal

We experience chapped lips all year round due to cold and dry weather, insufficient or lack of nutrients (vitamin B), smoking, improper diet or even medications or thyroid hormone imbalance can cause chapped lips. But, with the cold upon us it becomes a much more common problem and we need a little extra cold weather care for our sensitive puckers. Lips are the most vulnerable to drying out as we lose up to 10 times the moisture through our lips than anywhere else on the face or body. Lips are mucous membranes so they have very thin surface layers of skin on them which isn’t good for winter lip lock.

Here are a few reasons WHY & HOW lips chap and how to best help the problem.

1. Do not exfoliate your lips! If you are it can break down the thin layers of skin you do have on them.

2. Pick perfect lip product! Some lip products actually have drying ingredients such as scented lip gloss or plumpers. Cinnamates, which create the scent can easily irritate the skin so try a fragrance-free gloss. Also keep an eye out for ieucalyptus, menthol, and camphor which can also cause irritation and dryness.

3. Not all lip balms are alike! Wax based balms have less protection so choose a petroleum based treatment like Aquaphor Healing Ointment $4.79 Petrolatum is one of the most common occlusive agents, but you can also look for castor seed oil, shea butter, sunflower seed oil, or squalane to nourish cracked lips. Plus look for an SPF lip balm such as Aveeno Lip Conditioner Essential Moisture SPF 15 $3.70 or Blistex Lip Infusion SPF 15 $2.75.

4. Avoid using products daily that come in little pots as dipping your finger in a jar isn’t as sanitary as using a tube applicator.

5. Do not lick or bite your lips! People tend to bite and lick their lips when they’re stressed, causing them to get even dryer. “As saliva evaporates, it dehydrates skin further,” Linder tells WebMD. “Saliva also contains acids that help break down food. Those acids only cause irritation when sitting on compromised lip skin, Linder says.

6. Sleep slathered!  One of the keys to avoiding cracked lips is to apply balm early and often so when we sleep we loose a window of opportunity. Try wearing a thick layer of ointment to bed. “Many of us sleep with our mouths open, causing our lips to dry out.” Applying a treatment at bedtime means you’ll be less likely to wake up with chapping.” Los Angeles dermatologist Jessica Wu, MD  Try Neosporin Lip Health Overnight Renewal Therapy. $4.99

7. Cold Weather blitz. Protect your lips like yourself with a scarf in cold weather. You can’t walk around with a face mask but you can create a barrier between the cold and your lips by always wearing a lip balm and trying to not let your lips go bare.

Top Fall Eye Shadow Palettes

From High to Low, if you’re looking for a stunning all in one eye shadow palette then here are a few of my favorite Fall picks.

Tom Ford’s Eye Shadow Quad in Sahara Haze $75.00 The Sahara Haze palette is impressive for not only its rich and interesting colour combination but also for its varied textures that blend and work perfectly together. Using the lighter neutrals shades like cream or pale gray on your lids, and reserving a swipe of khaki green for your crease. Stunning colors and of course as Tom Ford always does, stunning packaging!

Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill For in Effeto Nudo $59.00 Perfect palette for everyday use! These palettes are crafted based on Armani’s innovative ColorFil technology for intense true color (even with Matte eyeshadow). This palette 04 Effeto Nudo is “the” neutral palette.  This beige highlight works wonders for opening up the eyes and the  brown and taupe matte shades are great for contouring.  The palette consists of three matte colors so if you’re looking for shine this isn’t the palette for you.

Nars The American Dream $55.00 This eyeshadow palette houses six top-selling shades under one palette roof and proves to be the most versatile of the list. With three light ‘daytime’ shades and three darker ‘smokey’ shades, the range works into both day and night looks. Just add color Tzarine (bottom right) which is full of complex shimmer and adds a little glamour to your eye makeup.

E.L.F.’s Studio Eye Enhancing Shadow $6.00 Definitely a cheap thrill! This is E.L.F’s ‘Studio’ brand, known to carry much better items than the regular collection. A new item for them the palettes are available in six shade selections and house six eyeshadows each all intended to complement specific eye colors. I’m not the biggest fan of this coloring method as I think skin tone and hair color come into play here as well. However, the Brown Eyes 1 palette is a beautiful range and again, quite the steal at $6!

CoverGirl Eye Enhancers 4 Kit Eye Shadow, Pure Romance 235 $4.99 This quad has great everyday colors with a great highlighter all at the amazing price of $4.99 plus you can even find online coupons for CoverGirl and get a real beauty budget steal!

Bon Voyage Beauty!

The dreaded international flight. How to do right by your skin while 30,000 feet in the air for 10 hours? Just read on!

PRE-FLIGHT PREP

As important as it is to stay hydrated on a regular basis by drinking water it is doubly as important when you are getting ready to and while flying. Try to double up on your water in-take in the days leading up to your flight. If you aren’t regularly taking a fish oil then add it into your daily regime. The fatty acids in fish oil are proven to both help the brain and cardiovascular function and help skin cells retain moisture. It’s a good idea to also throw some in your carry-on for in-flight or during your time away. It’s a powerful punch for something that doesn’t take up valuable shopping space in luggage.

IN FLIGHT OPERATION

Even if you pick a couple of these tips it will do wonders for your arrival.

1. Drink lots of water even if it means getting up multiple times to the frustration to the aisle passenger.

2. Drink hot water with lemon, refreshing, hydrating, and lemon is key to metabolic boosting!

3. Use a Hydrating mist every few hours to keep your skin feeling refreshed and stop it from getting tight. Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs & Rosewater
Price: $11.95

4. During the flight, in addition to spritzing your mist, try to re-apply your moisturizer.  The constant air conditioning can suck the life out of your skin, so even if your skin is usually oily, you’ll notice it absorbing moisturizers much faster.

5. Apply lip balm. The same applies for the lips in that the cabin air will suck the nourishment up so try Smith’s Rosebud Salve, $6.00 or Caudalie Lip Conditioner, $12.00 both available at Sephora.

6. Sanitize – A breeding ground for germs it’s important to make sure you land healthy on the other end. The worst would be to find yourself on an amazing vacation and coming down with a cold 2 days later. Sanitize your hands with  L’Occitane Lavender Clean Hand Gel from the Provence to Go Collection, $7.00.

FAVORITE TRAVEL KITS

Trilogy Travellers takes the hassle out of packing and has everything you need to land with a glow. Plus I love the packaging! $37.00

Dermalogica Skin Kits have all the benefits of a full regimen… to go. Featuring convenient travel sizes in a durable travel pouch, your Skin Kit allows you to hit the road safe in the knowledge that you’re packing a full regimen of products. 35.00.

To read up on other travel kit options check out this article at Marie Claire.

UPON LANDING

Before you land give yourself a quick face wash with either a rinse free cleanser or a cleanser wipe. Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes $4.99 are some of my favorite nourishing wipes! They are non-comedogenic, use no alcohol, and have the added benefits of PRO-VITAMIN B5 which are known to help restore, soften and smooth skin.

Then make sure to re-apply your moisturizer and touch up your make-up with the bare minimum. To mask the jet lag try a concealer, YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch, $40, to cover up dark circles and redness. Then add a couple coats of mascara, such as Covergirl LashBlast Length Mascara, $6.94, to open up your eyes. And lastly, a lip or cheek stain in a soft pink or peach shade to hide any redness from the flight. If you go with a creme it also has the added benefit of creating a dewy look with appears more youthful and energized. It’s better to look clean and effortless while traveling.

Bon Voyage ladies… arrive in style!

Delight Your Senses and Set the Mood!

One thing you can always count on that can alter a room is a beautiful candle with a lovely wafting scent. Not only are candles the most impactful way of effecting the look of a room, they add charm and can effect your mood via sense of smell and a glowing warmth. I have always had a huge affinity for candles and even remember back to my college days at Parsons School of Design when I would save up to buy a candle I’d been coveting. I say ‘save’ up because even early on I could see the difference between a good candle and a bad candle, from the wick, to type of wax, container, and to the way it burns.

A good candle starts with a clean wax, this could be wax of any kind but I prefer a soy, beeswax, or a vegetable wax, a good wick (no lead), and a heat proof container. Add a high quality essential oil fragrance that is pure and undiluted. However, if the parts are not of equal quality you will still get a sub par result.  If you take the best wick, and the best oils, and then blend them in a cheap, dirty wax, your candle will still smoke and not honor the integrity of the fragrance in the oils.  But, if you blend a pure essential oil, a clean wax, and a lead-free wick that is sized for the oil, wax, and container, you will have a beautiful candle that burns slow, completely, evenly, and throws a soft fragrance throughout the room while you bask in the flattering glow!

Here are few of my favorite all-time luxury candle picks. Soon to come my more budget friendly top picks!

The classic Dyptique Baies scent in a black colored glass container with a scent that recalls a bouquet of roses and deep blackcurrant leaves, one of my all time go to candles for home or as a special gift for those that appreciate true luxury.
Size: 300g (10.2 oz) Price: $90.00 Or available as a Standard candle $60.00Mini $28.00

Delirium Suede & Smoke candle is a slightly cheaper candle that always gets comments when people walk in the room. The smell is super sexy without being cheesy. Per the Delirium site it is a “smoldering vaporous mingling of tobacco leaves, moss, papaya, lapsangsouchong dark tea and green manda. Reminiscent of sitting in a worn leather chair next to a burning fireplace. Encased in a midnight blue vessel w/ silver embossed snuff lid.” I don’t like flowery candles so both this candle and the Dyptique candle have a rich musky smell.  Size: 7.9 oz Price: $38.00

Marianne Guedin Figue Fraiche (Fresh Fig) candles are manufactured in France with perfumes from Grasse. The fresh fig scent is “like an open oven that lets the roasted odor of warm fig escape into the air”. Each candle comes in a beautiful recycled glass container but most importantly are made from almost 100% of the SAFEST wax you can buy, BEESWAX.  Size: 6.7 oz Price: $64.00

CoverGirl LashBlast Clump Crusher Mascara

So this product was just named one of Allure’s 2012 beauty breakthrough products so naturally, I’m intrigued. Especially because as of late I’ve been on a search for a new amazing mascara. My go to for years has been Lancome Definicils and I still love this mascara. However, I wanted to find a more dramatic option for night time or when the mood calls for it. A couple months back I wrote about the Kevyn Aucoin tube technology mascara. I wrote a positive review as I loved, and still do, the rick black color of this mascara. My only warning after now using it a while longer and in different circumstances is, don’t wear it to the workout! I went to a spin class with this mascara on and unbeknownst to me, after 20 minutes of talking to people after class, I then went to the restroom too see black spider-like remnants of mascara on my face. To bad no one had the said anything to me, I was so embarrassed.

The next mascara I tried which I am liking quiet a lot is Stila glamorous mascara. It has a nice thickness to it without feeling to heavy for daytime. And, it opens up the eye a lot with good lengthening. However,  if you apply more than a couple of coats it does start to clump a little bit.

Which brings us to the much anticipated and well priced CoverGirl LashBlast Clump Mascara. Now, this mascara is not out yet, it hits shelves November 1st so this is not an official review.  It’s a PRE-REVIEW and I’d love for you to join me in testing it when it hits stores. Send us feedback and let us know if you think the buzz is true!

Review from November Allure:

True story: As much as we love our mascara, one un-lucky editor at Allure stopped wearing it altogether because she couldn’t find a formula that didn’t clump. That is, until we gave her this new CoverGirl mascara with a brush designed to prevent clump formation entirely.

How it works: Regular mascaras need ingredients to build volume so they inevitably will create clumps. The CoverGirl team came up with a solution: They measured the size of the average visible mascara clump (it’s 325 microns, if you were wondering) and arranged the bristles so close together that clumps couldn’t form. “You can swipe it on repeatedly to build the necessary volume without ever worrying about the mess.

COUPON ALERT – The November issue of both Allure & Lucky both have a $3 off coupon for any two CoverGirl products excluding trial/travel size.

Coming Nov. 1st to a drugstore near you!

How to get Zen while Working: Florame USB Oil Diffuser

Somewhere in the spectrum of the stress or joys of work there is always room for a little aromatherapy relief. I’m a believer that scent and aromatherapy stimulates positive and calming energy. Although essential oils used in aromatherapy are not regulated by the FDA there are studies which show benefits such as relief for anxiety and depression as well as an improvement in quality of life, particularly those with chronic health conditions.

Which brings us to the uber-benefits of sitting at your computer, a tech savvy working gal, and plugging in a USB scent diffuser into your computer drive to align with your actual ambitious work drive. I was totally intrigued when I found the Florame USB Oil Diffuser at detoxmarket and set it straight to work.  How it works: Pick from fragrances like bergamot, verbena, peppermint, or lavender, fill the miniature bottle included in the package with your oil of choice, insert it into the specially designed USB portal, plug it into your computer, and let the air purification begin. If the scent feels too strong there are three different settings to regulate dispersal. I selected the yogi scent which is a blend of organic essential oils that induce harmony and peace. I found it initially a bit strong but I adjusted the dispersal and was fine. Now just because it plugs into your USB it doesn’t mean the device stores data like an actual flash drive, at least not yet! Florame oils are made in Provence, France and are also 100% organic.

Essential oils used in aromatherapy are typically extracted from various parts of plants and then distilled. These highly concentrated oils can then be inhaled directly, or diffused or applied to the skin through massage, lotions or bath salts. The way aromatherapy is thought to work is by stimulating smell receptors in the nose, which then send messages through the nervous system to the limbic system — the part of the brain that controls emotions. This limbic system when stimulated releases endorphins, neurotransmitters and other ‘feel-good’ chemicals.

Here are some of the top essential oils used and their purposes:

  1. Chamomile – Known for the popular herbal drink, chamomile is said to be useful for tension and anxiety, as well as improving sleep problems. It can also be used to soothe stress-related skin conditions.
  2. Eucalyptus – Eucalyptus is sometimes known as the natural antiseptic – useful for coughs, colds, aches and pains. It has a woody, camphorous scent.
  3. Geranium – The floral, earthy scent of geranium is said to be helpful for stimulating the nervous system as well as various skin conditions.
  4. Lavender – A well-known scent, the soothing qualities of Lavender can be used to combat anxiety and stress. It’s also said to be useful for burns or skin conditions.
  5. Peppermint – Peppermint tea has been oft recommended for digestive problems, and the refreshing scent can also be used to combat nasal congestion which arises from colds.
  6. Lemon – The sharp, tangy scent of lemon can help stimulate the nervous system and it is also said to be useful for the circulatory system.
  7. Tea tree – Another natural antiseptic, the fresh scent of tea tree oil can help with lung congestion as well as warding off bugs and insects.
  8. Rosemary – The well-known herb can produce an essential oil which can help with muscle aches and fatigue.
  9. Ylang Ylang – This oil has been known as a natural antidepressant, soothing anxieties and reducing muscle tension.
  10. Sandalwood – The rich, sweet fragrance of Sandalwood is used mainly for skin complaints.
